The Liverpool Limb Reconstruction Service, established in 1996, provides the regional and regional adult and paediatric Limb Reconstruction Service for the North-West of England. Our referral base covers Cheshire and Merseyside, as well as parts of Greater Manchester, Lancashire, North Wales and the Isle of Man. We also see and treat patients for second and third opinions from other parts of England and Wales.
We treat:
- Problems with fracture fixation of both upper and lower limbs
- Nonunions and malunions of both upper and lower limbs
- Limb length inequality
- Joint stiffness
- Complex hindfoot pathology
We provide the regional service for Osteomyelitis and Fracture Related Infection.
Our ethos has always been to provide principle-based treatment rather than focus on one technique. Our methods of treatment have evolved considerably, focussing on patient comfort and satisfaction, rather than only using on external fixation methods to treat our patients.
All our surgeons are comfortable using not only circular external fixation, but also monolateral external fixation, plate and screw fixation, and intramedullary nailing, including lengthening nails as appropriate. All patients are treated by shared decision-making, after a full consultation in a multidisciplinary setting.
Our adult elective service is based in Broadgreen Hospital, where we have a 15 bedded ward for elective limb reconstruction, with purpose-built physiotherapy and occupational therapy areas.
Our adult trauma service is based at Aintree Hospitals, with all our team providing a weekly specialist Limb Reconstruction and Orthoplastic Service.
Limb Reconstruction Services are also delivered in Whiston Hospital by one of our Consultants Mr K. Saldanha.
Our paediatric service is based at Alder Hey Hospital.
We have a very close collaboration with the Plastic surgeons in our region and we often operate jointly in open fractures and infection related cases. You will find details on our Mersey Ortho-Plastic group page.
